2007 Match Reports
Wherwell Vs Newport Gents
16/09/07
On a loverly sunny day, Wherwell elected to bat first with a fresh autumnal breeze from the school end. Starting off well the top order put in an average performance as the wickets started to tumble, then Nathan young (34) and Jez Holman (20) stopped a batting collapse, but in the end the tail was asked to wag yet again, with Jack Whiteside and Richard Rowles adding a much needed 16 runs to the board, to end on 155 all out.
After tea, the opening bowlers looked slightly jaded as the effects of overlapping cricket and football seasons took their toll. But it was left to an awesome spin duo of Ryan Young (1-23 off 8), and Richard Rowles (1-14 off 7) to crank up the pressure on the Newport Gents, with Merv "the swerve" resisting the temptation to charge down the wicket after such ultra slow bowling.
After all that immensely frustrating spin it was left to Craig Cackingham (3 wickets), Jack Whiteside and Scott Blackmore (1 wicket a piece), to clear up. Newport Gents were 37 runs short at the end of a great game of cricket.
Wherwell V Purbrook
09/09/07
Wherwell came within a few games of an unbeaten record all season, but it wasn’t to be. Wherwell entertained Purbrook whose friendly side was a combination of their 5 teams.
On a very warm Sunday in September, Wherwell won the toss and elected to bat first, Wherwell struggled against some excellent opening bowling losing wickets at regular intervals, Jez Holman top scored with 31, to Wherwell’s credit they did bat out the full 40 overs to reach 170-9, thanks to spirited tall gunning from the Likes of Jack Whiteside.
Wherwell knew it might be an under-par score, and it proved to be, the Purbrook openers came out with intent to score the runs quickly making 35 runs of the first 4 overs, but Wherwell recovered, with Mark Pettman and Richard Rowles keeping the run rate down, but dropped catches cost Wherwell the game in the end. Purbrook knocked off the runs in 32 overs, with 4 wickets to spare, in what was Wherwell’s most competitive game of friendly cricket (and only defeat) all season.
Wherwell v Singh XI
02/09/07
Wherwell’s successful Sunday side made a trip to Southampton to play a team they had never played before in their history. On what can only be describe as a pitch with extreme carry, Wherwell fielding and bowling started well with N Young causing real problems for the Singh XI with his pace and carry picking up 2 wickets and J Holman also picking up 2 wickets. R Rowles was brought on and then cleaned up the tail bowling just 2.4 overs, picking up 4 wickets for just 7 runs with Wherwell bowling out the home side for just 113. After tea Wherwell came out looking to carry on there unbeaten season, although losing 6 wickets chasing down the target, Wherwell never really looked in any trouble. I Whyton top scored with 32 and J Spackman 23 were the main contributors. So the winning season keeps going can they be beaten with only a few games left?
Wherwell v Longparish
26/08/07
Wherwell won the toss and elected to bat, A good start by the Wherwell openers and looked set to make a good team score, but 5 wickets going down in the space of 5 overs, left Wherwell in a very precarious position 59-5, and it was left to Nathan Young and Nigel Horne to rebuild the innings, N Young 26 and N Horne 36 and with the tail wagging took Wherwell up to 197-9 off 40 overs. After tea Wherwell knew it was going to need a good bowling performance to stop Longparish knocking off the runs, and so it proved a good spell from S Norridge 7 overs, 3-28 and with 4 other bowlers sharing the other wickets, Wherwell bowled Longparish out for 169, cementing a fine double over Longparish. A win that still keeps Wherwell's Sunday side unbeaten record going with only a few games left of the season.
Wherwell v Andover V
25/08/07
Wherwell were invited to field first after losing the toss, on what was the final league fixture for Wherwell and the best possible position wanted in the league and good fielding performance was needed to ensure promotion. A tight opening spell from the N Young and M Pettman created real pressure and the 1st change bowlers then took the wickets and with catches being held Wherwell skittled Andover V's out for a very modest 73. Pick of the bowlers Stu Norridge 6 overs, 4 maidens, 4-3 and Craig Beckingham 9.4 overs, 1 Maiden, 3-25. Tea was taken and Wherwell came out looking to wrap a comprehensive victory. Although losing a couple of wickets, Wherwell never looked in any trouble chasing down the target and got there in only 15 overs, and everyone was going home by 6.00. A good league season for Wherwell and they look on course to of achieved promotion.
Nine Man Wherwell beat Steeple Langford II
11/08/07
Losing the toss Wherwell took to a hot and tiring field with only 9 men, and it was Craig Beckingham that took the first wicket with the 7th ball of the innings, although a collapse was not on the cards wickets kept falling steadily but slowly right up to the 40th over. By the end of the innings Steeple Langford were on 187 for 8. Pick of the bowling was Nathan young 3-33, and Craig Beckingham on 3-36. An unlucky Richard Rowles 0-48 off 3 overs, and Stuart Norridge 0-43, left the field without a single scalp.
After tea Wherwell Took to the field, as Ian Whyton and Colin Hitchings began to craft an impressive partnership with Colin’s wicket falling in the 18th over with the total on 90. Beckingham then provided a short but sweet 15 before an unbelievable 6ft run out. It was then left to Dave Langford who came to the crease in the 24th over with 117 on the board. Together Dave and Ian then notched up the remaining 70 runs off the next 8 overs (Ian Whyton 67 no, Dave Langford 37 no) to give Wherwell an impressive and well earned win with 10 overs to spare.
Sid Rowles Memorial Match
05/08/07
It was a perfect day on sunday for the Sid Rowles Memorial Cricket Match, not a clould in the skys above Wherwell, and only a light breeze to help cool the field. By the start of play at 11am the sun was already scorching hot, on a day that saw three mixed teams of players and non-players take to the field. The winning team was lead by Andy Hampson, Young Players of the day were Cameron and Aiden Lewington from Austrailia, Batsman of the Day went to Gary Mead, Bowler of the day was Wayne Archer, and Player of the Day went, to everyones surprise, to Richard Rowles. From the first game to the last all players were involved in a truly inclusive day of cricket played in the true sprit of the game, where players were invited from Australia, Ireland, France, and Finland, as well as the UK of course.
Wherwell v Longparish II
04/08/07
After winning the toss Wherwell asked Longparish II to field first, on what was a very warm and sunny afternoon. This was a big local derby for the sides and Wherwell got off to a reasonable start, trying to make it as hard work as they could for the Longparish fielders in the heat. Gary Mead once again in the runs again contributed 52 and Jez Holman 34 in a total of 200-7 off there 42 overs, thanks to Mark Pettman (20*) hitting 7 off the last over. After tea, the sun was still shining and Longparish II were after 201 to win to beat there local rivals. Opening batsman Stu Tognerelli looked as if he would get his team home but got out for a very good 80 and at a crucial time with just 50 needed. Wherwell began to squeeze the pressure and with Longparish needing 14 off the last over with only 2 wickets in hand they lost a wicket with the second ball of the over, and couldn’t manage the final runs required and finishing up on 193-9 off 42 overs. Pick of the Wherwell bowlers Craig Beckingham 4-27. A very close match in the end, ended with Wherwell coming out on top in this local derby match.
Wherwell v Burbage
(29/07/07)
Wherwell traveled to Burbage with a very much weakened side due to holidays and unavailability and with only 10 players, and had to work really hard to maintain there unbeaten season. Winning the toss stand in skipper Stu Norridge decided to bat first. Wherwell limped to 108 all-out with only Nigel Horne 32 anything to really note. Tea was taken and Wherwell knew they had to be sharp and needed some very good bowling, and so it was the hero was again Craig Beckingham brilliant figures of 6.3 overs, 5 maidens 5-5, were superb and Wherwell had bowled Burbage out for 88, A great performance in the field and the unbeaten season carries on.
Wherwell v Thruxton
(28/07/07)
On what was a very sunny start of the day ended with Wherwell bowling Thruxton out just before the rain came, Wherwell innings was making steady progress, when at the lost of the first wicket Gary Mead was sent in, his timing and power of hitting a cricket ball came to the forth, hitting a wonderful 118 off just 48 balls, which included 6 fours and 12 sixes and losing 5 balls in the process. He was assisted by Ian Whyton who batted nearly the whole innings for 66 and was caught with just a few overs to go. Wherwell had reached 254-4 with all the bowlers suffering from Mead’s hitting. After tea Wherwell were looking to try and clinch victory, some tight opening bowling from Mark Pettman with figures of 12 overs 4-39, but first change bowler Craig Beckingham had great figures 7 overs, 3 maidens 5-15, mainly bowlign at kids. Wherwell were then home and had bowled out Thruxton for just 83, and in the end a very comfortable victory just as the heavens were about to open.
Wherwell v Whiteparish II
(21/07/07)
On what was a wet couple of days leading up to this match, there was doubt as to the game would be played, a tarpaulin cover of the wicket protected that and the outfield dried out from the sunshine Saturday morning and the game was on. Wherwell won the toss and elected to field first with a bit of cloud cover and moisture in the wicket the reasons behind this. Whiteparish II got off to a very slow start with the opening bowling attack very much keeping the runs down although not taking any wickets. There was then a rain interruption for 40 mins and tea was taken during this, which meant the Duckworth Lewis method would come into affect for Wherwell innings. Once the rain stopped Whiteparish II came back out and finished off there innings 151-6 off 42 overs. So after calculating the final score using the Duckworth-Lewis metgod, Wherwell needed 137 off 35 overs, a bad start was made with a couple of very dodgy lbw decisions resulted in Wherwell being in a sport of bother at 4-3, but a valiant 38 from Stu Norridge and 26 from Nigel Horne was not enough, with the latter being caught by a stunning catch with just 20 required at that stage, however it wasn’t to be and Wherwell were bowled out in the 28th over for just 118.
Wherwell v Phoenix
(15/07/07)
Wherwell late change of opponents resulted in them playing an unknown team from Southampton, and really did not know what to expect. Wherwell lost the toss and were asked to field and a fantastic start left Phoenix in a lot of bother at 21-5, skipper Nathan Young taking his foot off the gas bowling very much part time bowlers to try and make a game, little did they know how much they were going to struggle. This resulted in probable the funniest moment of the season so far with Richard Rowles going behind the stumps to keep wicket, in the end Phoenix were bowled out for 137. As it always proves little totals can sometimes be very hard to chase and at one stage with a lot of the top order out it looked as if Wherwell unbeaten record could come to a surprising end to say the least, but thanks to Scott Blackmore 37* and Stu Norridge 31 Wherwell were home and a win by 2 wickets.
Shrewton II v Wherwell
(14/07/07)
Wherwell travelled away to Shrewton II, on a sunny afternoon in Wiltshire. Wherwell won the toss and elected to bat, once again good starts were made but wickets were falling, in the end Wherwell ended up 232-7 off 42 overs, with the main contributors being John Jakeman 61*, Colin Hitchings 35 and Nigel Horne 33*. Tea was taken and Wherwell were looking to come out and clinch another win to increase there chances of promotion. It proved a very hard fought win in the end partly due to the opener being dropped twice in the first over, by Richard Rowles and Nigel Horne, then going on to make 81, but once his wicket fell the team fell away with wickets spread throughout all the bowlers although still putting on runs and managed 222 all out with 1 ball remaining. A good win for Wherwell in the end but hard fought was to say the least.
Wherwell Sunday v Colden Common Sunday
(08/07/07)
Probably Wherwell Sunday side toughest challenge yet against another unbeaten side Colden Common, again Wherwell lost the toss and were ask to field on what was a very hot afternoon, Colden Common got off to a flyer and it was looking like it was going to be a hot and tiring afternoon for Wherwell in the field, but the break through was made when Richard Rowles 3-32 bowled the opening batsmen after they had put on 141, wickets then came at regular intervals but a challenging total for Wherwell was set with Colden Common finishing up on 229-5 off 40 overs. Tea was taken and after tea Wherwell came out looking to protect there unbeaten run this year and so it proved a great chase was achieved with the main contributors Ryan Young 68 not out and his brother Nathan Young 62, as the Wherwell Sunday side keep up there winning run.
Wherwell v Broughton
(07/07/07)
After losing the toss Wherwell were put into bat on what looked liked a damp wicket but was almost certain to dry out throughout the afternoon, Wherwell started the innings well with a few players making starts but not going on, Nathan Young held the innings together with 64 not out and helped his team to a total of 206 for 8 off there 42 overs. After tea Broughton came out to bat and got off to the worse start losing 2 wickets in the opening 2 overs and never really recovered from that and disappointedly fell well short falling all out for just 63 pick of the bowlers for Wherwell Nathan Young 3 for 14 and Craig Beckingham 4 for 7 off 2.3 overs, Which included a Hat Trick with the last 3 wickets of the day. So in the end a quite convincing victory for Wherwell as they begin to move up the table.
Rain Fails To Dampen Ashes Spirit
(24/06/2007)
Two teams of Wherwell players braved poor weather conditions in an effort to raise funds for The Brecknock Hospice as the Wherwell XI took on the Presidents XI in the annual ashes match. the Wherwell side captained by league skipper Richard Rowles won the toss and elected to bat first in the two innings 20-20 match.
Craig Beckingham managed 23 in that first innings helping Wherwell to a healthy 117 all out from 19.3 overs. The presidents XI, Captained by club president Jamie Brecknock, started strong with Jamie Stamp making 22, and Tom Hoad making 24 in spectacular fashion but fell short with 109 all out off of 18.2 overs. Beckingham was once again invaluable for Wherwell with figures of 4-21 off 4.
Wherwell took to bat for the second time with an improved sense of purpose and the only spell of clear skies in the match. Opener Nigel Horne was faced with an attacking field but managed to keep his head and retired on 26 finishing the Match 31 not out. James Spackman also retired on the same score and Colin Hitchings managed 22. Pick of the bowlers was Tom Hoad with 3-17 off 3.
This left the Presidents XI with a target of 158 runs to win but a slow start put the task further from reach although nothing would stop them from giving it a go, even the heaviest rain of the day didn’t put them off. Dave Langford batted middle order and retired on 26, Nathan Young also put up a fight with 20 runs, 16 of which came off 3 balls. As the rain continued to pour down the Presidents XI fell for 99.
The Ashes were presented to the winning captain Richard Rowles and a special presentation of Player of the Day was presented to Nigel Horne for his 31 not out, 6 stumpings and 1 catch.
A very entertaining game of cricket, made even more so by the refusal, by any player, to even consider leaving the pitch for bad weather. Continuing the Ashes match tradition and ensuring the memory of Lady Brecknock and her legacy continues in the spirit it was forged and hopefully will do so for many years to come. More than £600 was raised on the day with more due to be collected for a very worthy cause. Plans are already underway for next years match.
Wherwell make it 5 in a row
(17/06/07)
Wherwell lost the toss and were put into bat, After a couple of slow overs Craig Beckingham felt the pressure and decided to try to up the run rate, unfortunately in doing this getting himself bowled out, Ryan Young again in the runs and holding the innings together with 62, before getting caught on the boundary. A good partnership between Nathan Young 33 n.o and Stuart Norridge 19 n.o saw Wherwell reach 176 for 7. After tea, Sway came out to bat showing some nice classy drives, After 25 overs sway were 107 needing just 5 an over! Ryan Young then wrapped up the victory with figures of 3-6 of 3.1 overs, which gave Nigel Horne a chance to show of his smart glove work, getting 3 stumpings, Making 5 wins out of 5 for the Sunday side.
Holman Finds Form
(16/06/07)
Wherwell elected to field first on a damp pitch, Mark Pettman started things of by picking up a wicket in the first over, he continued and bowled his 12 overs straight off with his usual line and length giving batsman all sorts of problems, finishing up with figures of 2-38. Wherwell almost feel asleep in the field with several catches going down, but Wherwell woke up and good bowling at the death from Craig Beckingham 3-39 resulted in wickets falling and after the 42 overs East Tytherley II finished on 177. Wherwell’s inform batsmen Ian Whyton went in the 3rd over for a duck and Wherwell looked to be struggling when Craig Beckingham got out cheaply, But Jez Holman 77 and Nathan Young 56 put on a partnership of 113, before both being caught. This was the partnership to all but see Wherwell home. Wherwell got the total 6 overs to spare. Wherwell now starting to find form after a dodgy start to the season

(10/06/07)
Winning the toss, Wherwell elected to bat first, a good opening partnership of 82, with R.Young being the main contributor with 56 and 30 from A.McGlashan, and very helpful 39 from J.Spackman in the middle order meant Wherwell had reached 184 allout with only 1 over spare. Tea was taken, Esso Fawley came with a young side but with a lot of potential, but the total just proved a bit too much for them reaching 113 allout notable bowling from Pettman 3-18, ensuring that the winning of every Sunday game continued.
Whyton Leads Wherwell Home
(09/06/07)
Wherwell were asked to field first on what was a very hot afternoon, with the effective opening bowling partnership of N.Young and M.Pettman taking six wickets between them, both bowling there 12 overs through, Pettman finishing up with figures of 4-30. Wickets were falling at regular intervals for Compton and Chandlers Ford III, and they reached a very modest 120 allout, with a very good bowling performance and good fielding have a major factor in the low total. Wherwell’s inform batsmen Ian Whyton came out looking to guide his team home and so he did getting most of the runs required with a superb 82 not out, a comfortable win for Wherwell and with that slowly beginning to creep up the league.

Centurion Whyton Leads Wherwell Home
(26/05/07)
Wherwell won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a very good wicket and good weather conditions, they were looking to post a big score against a very confident South Wilts side. The innings started off well with the score ticking along at a good rate, but soon found themselves in a spot of bother at 82-5. Ian Whyton was still there having opened the batting and was looking good at crease, joined by Nathan Young the pair put on an 83 run partnership, until Young got out going for runs for the team. Shortly after Whyton brought up a brilliant hundred with a huge six over mid on, Whyton did not give a chance at all in reaching his ton, which made it all the more impressive and with some fierce hitting from Gary Mead with a 29 of 24 balls, Wherwell had reached 221-6 off there 42 overs, Whyton finishing up on 112 not out of 133 balls and batting right through the 42 overs.
Wherwell took to the field after tea, to be greeted by very dark conditions, but never the less, Wherwell made the early break through. But with a good partnership of 109 runs, it looked at one stage as if South Wilts could chase the score down but then C. Abel played one big shot too many and was caught just inside the boundary. It signaled a panic in the South Wilts camp but M. Shellum and R. Phillips looked as if they might get South Wilts home but the run rate proved too much for them. South Wilts ended up on 207-8 off their 42 overs.

Tea was taken and Wherwell Sunday side were looking to remain unbeaten and so it proved using 9 bowlers to give everyone a chance Bishopdown made 119 allout with notable bowling from Craig Beckingham 5-16 off 5 and Richard Rowles 3-10 off 5.
Run Chase Proved Too Much
(19/05/07)
On a cloudy and windy day at Dinton, Wherwell lost the toss and were asked to field. After 1.3 overs the rain came down and the players we off the field for 45 mins which was later to affect the Wherwell innings. Dinton got off to a reasonable slow start, but then soon started to find the boundaries but losing wickets at the same time. There innings was held together by 1 player who proved a very good all-rounder and he helped them to 177 allout, with the pick of the bowlers Nathan Young 4-23 and Mark Pettman 4-41. After many calculations it was worked out that by the Duckworth-Lewis method Wherwell needed 134 off 27 overs. After some tight bowling for the first 5 overs the score was 0-0 off 5. Ian Whyton did the best he could and reached 34 before being bowled by the all-rounder and 23 not out from Nathan Young, tried to get near the target but it just proved too much in the end and finished on 113-7 off there 27 overs.
Wherwell Stutter After Winning Start
(12/05/07)
Wherwell won the toss and elected to field on what was a cloudy and windy day. Wherwell opening bowlers J. Holman and S. Norridge both had really good spells, both bowling right through their 12 overs and only conceding 38 runs, for the loss of 3 wickets off 24 overs. The change of bowlers at either end then brought more wickets with the pick of the bowler being N. Young who finished up with figures of 5-24 of 5.5 overs. Wherwell had managed to bowl Michelmarsh and Timsbury II out for 83, which was some bowling effort.
Wherwell went into tea thinking that they all but had wrapped up there 2nd league win of the season, but a combination of loose shots and a couple of very debatable lbw decisions resulted in Wherwell being in an awful position 52-9, but for a last wicket stand of 27 which Wherwell nearly got out of jail it just proved to much and they fell 5 runs short and ended up 79 all out.

Just 2 overs were bowled but 3 wickets were taken all of which went to Matt Bliss. So tea was taken and Wherwell came back out looking for more of the same. Lasting about another 10 overs West Meon collapsed to 35 all out, with pick of the bowlers N.Young 1-3 off 3 overs, M.Bliss 3-5 off 3 overs and S.Blackmore 3-3 off 3 overs. Wherwell started their friendly season with a very convincing 118 run victory.
Wherwell’s Season Underway
(05/05/07)
Wherwell’s league season got underway with a match at Great Durnford on a warm sunny afternoon, played on what can only be described as a questionable wicket. Great Durnford won the toss and asked Wherwell to bat. The visitors found themselves in some trouble at 99-7 but Wherwell manage to reach 175 all out, with notable knocks by Scott Blackmore 36, Colin Hitchings 23 and Ian Whyton and Gary Mead both hitting 17. On this wicket it looked a very defendable total.
Wherwell took to the field wearing their new playing shirts and looked every bit a cohesive team. They had a good start taking wickets at regular intervals, A solid performance was somewhat marred by the injury of two Durnford players, the 2nd of which went to hospital with a suspected broken nose, that may well have knock the stuffing out of the rest of the team and they collapsed to 73 all-out. Pick of the bowlers for Wherwell being Nathan Young with 3 for 8 of 4.4 overs. A good 102 run victory giving Wherwell 23 points off the first match.
