Presidents XI Charity Match 2006

WCC raised £1000+ for Hospice

On Sunday Wherwell Cricket Club held their annual Presidents X1 cricket match to contest the Ashes trophy and raise funds for the Countess of Brecknock Hospice in Andover. The two teams where captained by Saturday captain Richard Rowles and The Earl of Brecknock and President to Wherwell Cricket Cub Jamie Brecknock. The two teams consisted of Wherwell players and invited guest with a game played over two innings for each team of twenty five overs per innings with a maximum of five overs per bowler.

With a start time of eleven o’clock the toss was taken and won by Richard Rowles and with the sun starting to break through some light clouds he decided to bat first. Despite the taking of a couple of early wickets and the further steady fall of wickets the Wherwell X1 where able to post an impressive score 151 losing their last wicket to the last ball of the penultimate over, this score was achieved mainly by John Jakeman who carried his bat to an impressive 74* aided by some slack bowling and fielding with the exception of Rob Dixon who took three well taken catches and Stuart Norridge with 4/31 from his five overs.

With the first and second inning separated by a lunch kindly donated by The Marquess of Camden the Presidents XI innings started later than scheduled and although they batted their full twenty five overs only managed a total 115 / 7 with Nathan Young the pick of the batman with 42 with Wherwell spreading the wickets among their ten bowlers used.

With a quick turn around between the second and third innings the Presidents XI made a big effort to restrict the Wherwell batsman resulting in John Jakeman finally losing his wicket for 14 and taking the wicket of the last man Stefan Jankowski in the twenty second over for a total of only 83, giving the Wherwell XI a combined total of 234 and giving the Presidents XI a target of 120 to win the Ashes.

A tea donated and prepared by Alan and Jill Rowles was then taken with guest of honour Sarah Redhead the Hospice Trust Director kindly giving up her Sunday afternoon to join the teams and lend her support.  After tea the Presidents XI set about their run chase steadily keeping up with the required run rate of 4.8 an over but wickets soon started to fall until finally they were all out in the twenty third over some 30 runs short of the required total but making an impressive combined total of 439 runs scored on the day.

With Ashes retained once again by the Wherwell XI Jamie gracefully accepted defeat and noted that he would return again for next years match which would see the Ashes contested for the fiftieth year. A total of £850 has been counted and raised and as a whole Wherwell CC look forward to presenting the cheque to the Brecknock Hospice.  Wherwell CC would like to thank everyone who made the day a great success.
